5: Uploading Your Site

With your sample site complete, you now need to publish it to the Internet. There are number of steps to this, but you may have followed some of them already:

Step 1: Getting Webspace

If you've done this already, go to the next step. Otherwise, you'll need to find somewhere to publish your site. If you have a standard Internet account with someone like AOL, CompuServe or Force 9 you will have web space anyway. In this case you can go to the next step.

Of course, many people may not have web space, or already use it for something else. Fear not, there are many places where you can get web space entirely for FREE. Simply search on AltaVista for 'Free Web Space'. When you have done this you'll get a list of all the sites that offer free web space. From this, simply select one that you would like to use and sign up. To use Iosphere's upload features you must select one that supports FTP, for example Crosswinds.

More About FTP

FTP is the Internet protocol that allows file uploads to a server. This is the same protocol that Iosphere uses to upload your site. When you register with a web space provider that supports FTP you will receive a username, password and FTP server name. Keep these - you'll need them later.

Step 2: Choosing an Upload Tool

The Microsoft way...

You may know how to upload you files already - if you're using Iosphere to its full potential you probably do. However, you need to know the easy way to do it from inside Iosphere 2.

There are two main upload tools that you can use to upload your site. The first is Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard, which comes with Internet Explorer 4 and above. You should read Microsoft's help before you use it. If you want to upload with anything other than FTP, you'll need it.

The preferred way...

Iosphere 2 contains a built-in automatic upload facility, which uses FTP to publish your pages to a web site. If you're publishing with FTP, this is the recommended upload tool.

Step 3a: Uploading With Iosphere

In Step 2 we examined how to create a site, but ignored the FTP setup. You now need to visit the 'Project Properties' () configuration pages, but change to the 'Remote Site' page.

The screen shot to the right shows what you will see when you select the 'Remote Site' page.

To those of you familiar with FTP these settings will be easy to configure. However, you should read the paragraph about silent upload. Those of you not so familiar should read on.

The Username is the name that identifies you to the server. When you signed up for your web space you should have received this, along with your Password and the Server. You should normally leave the Port setting at its default, unless your instructions say otherwise.

The FTP Proxy Settings can usually be left alone - if you do use a proxy server just copy the settings from Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

The Silent Upload setting determines whether Iosphere should provide full feedback while it is uploading, or just display it's status on the status bar. This is useful if you need to continue work while uploading.

Now that you've configured the FTP settings you can upload the site. Press the 'FTP Upload' icon () on the toolbar to begin uploading your site. If all goes well the site should upload itself.

Step 3b: Uploading With Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard

This is beyond the scope of this document - the help for MWPW tells you how to do it...

And that's it...you've created and published your first website. That's all there is to it!
