Between 2006 and 2009 I was involved in various parts of Imperial College’s student media, principally as editor of Live!, the news website. My goal upon taking over was to use improvements I could make to the back-end publishing systems to deliver the editorial message.
These improvements principally included adding rich content to the site, embedding photos, video, audio and live streams. The delivery of up-to-the-minute news, combined with video, photo and audio features won Live! an award for best student website at the 2007 Guardian Student Media Awards.
Live streaming of events formed a cornerstone of some of our activities, using a combination of PCs or laptops and Windows Media Server to stream live with multiple cameras from London Mayoral Hustings, a debate on the National Union of Students and the annual charity performing arts concert, ArtsFest. Each of these features was edited into a full-length feature and DVD.
