Background

I have filled a variety of software engineering roles stretching back over a decade, working both individually and as part of a team. Where possible I have looked to expand my roles to include management of external relationships, either with partner companies or directly with customers.

Technical and Senior Management Roles

Jul 2009-Aug 2010 – President, Imperial College Union (Elected Position)

  • CEO and Trustee for a £3.5m turnover charity in the higher education sector.
  • Governor of Imperial College London, a £500m turnover higher education institution.
  • Directly responsible for six staff members and a network of volunteer officers.
  • Indirectly responsible via the Operations Manager for over thirty staff and all aspects of representation, welfare support, bars, catering, retail and student activities.
  • Won support for a £2.4m refurbishment scheme for ICU’s commercial areas.

Apr-Oct 2004, Jun-Oct 2005 – Design Engineer, Celoxica (now Agility Design Solutions)

  • Added support for new hardware platforms to the core product.
  • New product development from prototype to release.
  • Sales work and partner relationship management in the United States and Europe.
  • Implementation of multimedia demos for new embedded system platform.
  • Created “how-to” articles for publication in the trade press.

Jul-Sep 2003 – Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme, Imperial College London

  • Projects in the Custom Computing Group, on a project for Atollic Ltd.
  • Evaluation of high-level languages for processor design.
  • Use of Handel-C language to validate large prime numbers in hardware.

Apr 2002-Jun 2003 – Part-time Consulting for ITC Internet

  • Development & deployment of replacement email system and domain control system.
  • Development of LAMP user database system, consolidating data sources and increasing automation. Integration with Windows servers and external user management systems.
  • Development and installation of integrated, automated online billing system.

Aug 1998, Jan 2001-2002 – Developer, Muller Martini Ltd. SCS Slave Project

  • Lead developer on newspaper press control software replacement project.
  • Simulation-driven development with one live test before deployment.
  • System remains in operation at newspaper plants in the UK.

Additional Responsibilities

Jan 2004-Jul 2008 – Tutorial Assistant & Lecturer

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate tutor programming tutor.
  • Taught a 42-hour operating systems lecture & lab course for 2 years, to a class of 100.
  • Conducted programming tutorials for a group of six first-year undergraduates.
  • Supervision of several undergraduate projects.

Aug 2003-Jul 2008 – RCS Motor Club, Imperial College Union

  • Filled the roles of Secretary and Chairman, managing a small group of volunteers to safely maintain & run a 1916 Dennis Fire Engine, including risk management and insurance issues.
  • Expansion of club membership and publicity.
  • Tested problem solving abilities and judgement.

Jul-Aug 1998 – Teaching Assistant, Summer Literacy Scheme

  • Assisting teaching staff with a group of 30 Year 6 children entering secondary school in September.
  • Provided one-to-one help to children with particular literacy problems.
