The Summer Literacy Scheme at The Hayes Manor School, 1998
A Summer Literacy Scheme, sponsored by the Government and The Hayes Manor School, took place from July 23rd to August 5th, 1998. During this period, 20 primary school leavers attended the school in order to develop their literacy skills prior to enrolment in September.
It was suggested by the scheme sponsors that 8 volunteer students be selected to act as support staff for the duration of the course. Such volunteers were, by necessity, to be polite, punctual, friendly, responsible and hard working.
I am pleased to say that Ashley Brown was selected as one such volunteer. He attended the scheme from Thursday 23rd July, to Wednesday 29th July. Ashley received training from the London Borough of Hillingdon Education Support Service, regarding support techniques, role and responsibilities.
Throughout the scheme, Ashley showed himself to be punctual, dedicated, communicative and supportive. He developed support techniques during the scheme and facilitated the improvement of literacy skills in those he worked with. A sound relationship existed between the volunteer and the students, and Ashley acted in complete support of the class teacher at all times.
Ashley worked with one or two children each day. He provided a strong role model for the children at all times. Ashley possesses careful speaking and listening skills and has taken into account the requirements of the teacher and task and matched such to the needs of the children. He has supported students in a variety of contexts, including IT, reading, writing, speaking and listening exercises.
Ashley's particular strengths include his excellent IT knowledge and skills, and his determined and assured interaction with the children. His own literacy skills enabled him to develop the learning activities in which the children were involved, by teaching additional skills to those students able to access such. Ashley's levels of effort and involvement were exemplary. His maturity was also noted by those staff with whom he worked.
Ashley receives the school's praise and recognition for his contribution to the successful running of the Summer Literacy Scheme.
