Real-World Computing Experience

As part of my Computing degree I undertook a period of employment with Celoxica Ltd. Celoxica is the technology leader for Software-Compiled System Design, a process that accelerates design productivity by using high-level languages to directly drive system design, verification and implementation.

I returned after graduation for a brief spell working with embedded processors for control of hardware video processing pipelines.

My UROP placement involved working for Wayne Luk, of the Custom Computing Group at Imperial College London, on a project for Atollic Ltd. During my time on the placement I undertook an extensive evaluation of Celoxica's DK1 and DK2 Design Suites and used these tools to work on the validation of large prime numbers in hardware.

I was responsible for the development and deployment of a replacement email system and facilitating a smooth changeover between systems.

I was responsible for the development of an online user database for one of ITC Internet's clients, replacing a raft of disparate data sources to reduce human intervention. The project utilised a database under Linux for user authentication with Windows content servers. External companies integrate with the system to manage users as required.

I developed an offline job-tracking database for one of ITC Internet's clients using Microsoft Access for both data storage and the user interface.

I was responsible for the development and installation of an online billing system for one of ITC Internet's clients, to replace an existing manual spreadsheet method. The resulting system received incredibly positive feedback from the client's end users.

Muller Martini Ltd is a company specialising in equipment for the graphic arts industry. I was the lead developer for a project to replace aging (20 year old) control software and proprietary hardware with new software running on standard PC hardware and operating systems. The project combines real-time machine control with smart-card authentication. The system is now in operation at newspaper plants around the UK.
